ATUSA Official USA Tango Championship & Festival

The ATUSA Official USA Tango Championship & Festival, held annually in Burlingame, California, was founded in 2015 as a premier event dedicated to the art of Argentine tango. This festival emerged from a desire to create a platform for tango enthusiasts in the United States to engage in authentic Argentine tango experiences, including competitions, workshops, and social dancing. The inaugural event took place at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel, featuring approximately 40 participants and live music from renowned musicians like Seth Asarnow. The festival was officially sanctioned by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Buenos Aires, establishing it as the only official Argentine tango competition in the U.S. and a preliminary event for the prestigious Tango Buenos Aires Festival and Dance World Cup.

Over the years, ATUSA has evolved significantly, expanding its offerings and attracting a growing number of participants. Each edition has maintained a consistent format, featuring workshops led by esteemed tango maestros, live performances, and the official championship competition. The festival has seen an increase in attendance, with participants coming from various regions to celebrate their passion for tango. The San Francisco Airport Marriott Hotel has served as a fitting venue, providing ample space for workshops and social dancing, while also offering stunning views of the San Francisco Bay.

Notable editions of the festival include the 2017 and 2018 events, which featured prominent tango teachers such as Eduardo Saucedo and Claudio Asprea. These editions not only showcased the competitive spirit of the participants but also highlighted the rich cultural heritage of tango through performances and workshops. The festival has celebrated various categories within the competition, including Tango de Pista and Stage Tango, allowing dancers of all levels to participate and showcase their skills.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, ATUSA has continued to adapt and thrive, celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2020 with a special program of activities.
