History

The Primavera Budapest Tango Marathon, a vibrant celebration of Argentine tango, was founded in 2013 by a passionate team led by Antónia Nagyáldi and Levente. The inaugural event, known as the 1st Primavera Budapest Milonga Weekend, took place from March 15 to 17, 2013, at the historic Danube Palace in Budapest. This initial gathering attracted around 40 participants and featured renowned tango instructors Özgür El Turquito Demir and Marina Marques, who led workshops that captivated attendees eager to immerse themselves in the tango culture. The event was designed to combine dance with the beauty of Budapest in spring, creating an inviting atmosphere for tango enthusiasts from near and far.

Over the years, the Primavera Budapest Tango Marathon evolved significantly, transitioning from a local gathering to a prominent international event. By 2015, the marathon format was established, allowing for continuous social dancing over several days without workshops. The event's popularity surged, leading to larger venues and an increasing number of participants. The Art Deco Grand Ballroom, a stunning venue in the heart of Budapest, became the primary location for the marathon, enhancing the overall experience with its romantic ambiance. Each edition saw a diverse lineup of talented DJs, ensuring a rich musical experience that complemented the dancing.

Notable editions of the marathon include the 7th edition in 2019, which marked a significant milestone as it was held in the Art Deco Grand Ballroom, offering unlimited snacks and refreshments to participants. The 8th edition in 2020 was particularly memorable, as it faced postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting the challenges that many events encountered during this period. Despite these setbacks, the organizers remained committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for tango lovers, rescheduling the marathon for 2021.

Today, the Primavera Budapest Tango Marathon stands as a testament to the resilience and passion of the tango community. With its 11th edition held in May 2023, the event continues to attract participants from around the globe, fostering connections and friendships through the shared love of tango. The marathon is celebrated not only for its exceptional dancing opportunities but also for its warm Hungarian hospitality, delicious cuisine, and the enchanting backdrop of Budapest in spring. As it looks forward to future editions, the Primavera Budapest Tango Marathon remains a cherished highlight in the international tango calendar.
