The Tango Festathon is an annual festival held in Austin, US, celebrating Argentine Tango through workshops and social dancing. This event marks its inaugural edition, bringing together tango enthusiasts for a vibrant experience.

History

The Austin Spring Tango Festival, a vibrant celebration of Argentine tango, was founded in 2009 by a dedicated group of local enthusiasts, including Vance Rightmire and Margaret Loeb. The inaugural event took place at Dancer's Workshop in Austin, Texas, attracting around 40 participants eager to immerse themselves in the world of tango. With master teachers from renowned tango hubs such as Buenos Aires and Chicago, the festival aimed to foster a sense of community and provide a platform for dancers of all levels to learn and connect through workshops and milongas.

Over the years, the festival has evolved significantly, transitioning from a small local gathering to a prominent regional event. By 2011, the festival had expanded its offerings to include 18 classes and three milongas, showcasing a diverse lineup of instructors and DJs. The Dance Institute became a key venue, hosting workshops and evening milongas, while the festival's reputation grew, drawing participants from across the United States and beyond. Each edition introduced new themes and special events, such as the popular Asado milonga, which became a staple of the festival experience.

Notable editions of the Austin Spring Tango Festival include its 15th anniversary in 2019, which celebrated the festival's growth and community spirit with an impressive roster of maestros and a weekend filled with workshops and social dancing. The festival continued to thrive, even amidst challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a hiatus in 2021. However, the festival made a triumphant return in 2022, emphasizing safety and community connection, and quickly regained its momentum.

Today, the Austin Spring Tango Festival stands as a testament to the enduring passion for tango in Austin. With a commitment to providing high-quality workshops and fostering a welcoming environment, the festival has become a cherished event for tango enthusiasts. As it approaches its 20th anniversary in 2025, the festival continues to attract dancers from various backgrounds, celebrating the art of tango and the vibrant community that surrounds it.
