The Tango Festival Alegria en Brzeg is an annual festival held in Brzeg, Poland, that has been celebrated since 2008. With 19 editions to date, it features multiple teachers, workshops, and milongas, making it a notable event in the Argentine Tango community.

History

The Tango Festival Alegria en Brzeg was founded in 2008 in the charming town of Brzeg, Poland, by a dedicated group of tango enthusiasts led by Ewa Maria Sikorska, Andrzej Sikorski, and Anna Chojnacka-Komorowska. The festival was born out of a passion for Argentine tango and a desire to create a vibrant community where dancers could come together to celebrate this beautiful art form. Initially known as 'Magia Tanga,' the festival quickly gained popularity among local and regional tango dancers, setting the stage for what would become a beloved annual event.

Over the years, the festival evolved significantly, transitioning from a small local gathering to a prominent regional event. The first edition attracted around 40 participants, but as word spread, attendance grew steadily. By 2019, the festival had expanded to include seven milongas, featuring concerts and performances, and offering a total of 30 hours of music. The change in name to 'Alegria en Brzeg' in 2018 marked a new chapter, celebrating a decade of tango in Brzeg and reflecting the festival's growth and renewed energy.

Notable editions of the festival include the 12th edition in 2019, which showcased an impressive lineup of tango musicians and dancers, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for attendees. The festival's reputation continued to flourish, drawing participants from various regions and even international attendees. However, the 13th edition in 2020 faced an unprecedented challenge as it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the vulnerability of live events in uncertain times.

Despite the setback, the festival rebounded in 2021 with its 14th edition, featuring workshops led by renowned tango teachers such as Luiza and Marcelo Almiron, and Beata Maia Gellert. This resilience demonstrated the community's commitment to preserving the tango culture and providing a platform for dancers to connect and learn. The festival has continued to thrive, with the 16th edition held in 2023 and plans for the 17th edition already underway for June 2024.

Today, the Tango Festival Alegria en Brzeg stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of tango and the dedication of its organizers and participants. It has become a significant event in the tango calendar, known for its warm atmosphere, high-quality workshops, and vibrant social dancing opportunities. The festival not only celebrates the art of tango but also fosters a sense of community among dancers, making it a cherished highlight for tango lovers in Poland and beyond.
